About us

Ching Tong

project manager

After such a wonderful experience working as the project manager last year for the hackathon. I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing cause. This year is new and exciting as we have partnered with the Design Thinking Challenge. I love the focus on building a beautiful and useful product for those who really could use our skillset. I feel lucky to participate in this hackathon and I can't wait to see what we accomplish this year.

Alec Branch

project manager

After years of leading the Design Thinking Challenge across Pariveda with individually crafted wicked problems, I wondered what it would be like if we took the challenge and posed it against real world problems to grow our fins and help others at the same time. I am very excited that that is now a reality! By joining forces with the Hackathon for Social Good, I am reinvigorated by the prospect of being of service to others and how that aligns with our mission and values as a company. In times like this, I think even the smallest of actions for others can make an impact and start a fire. I am excited for what is to come and to see the passion of Fins come to life through this partnership.

Will Kuhn

project manager

Will has always had a passion for solving problems over building technical ivory towers. At Pariveda, Design Thinking (DT) and User Centered Design (UCD) instantly became favorite tools and has been a Customer Experience (CX) enthusiast ever since. In true UX fashion, we evaluated Design Thinking Challenge and the biggest ask was for real world problems. Partnering with the Hackathon for Social Good enables us to deliver to more than just Fins.

Sam Gobrail

Principal, CX Lead

Sam serves as the Lead of the Customer Experience Practice and has a deep passion for growing and mentoring teams in putting the human at the center of product vision and design. Combining the Design Thinking Challenge with Hackathon just makes sense! We get to partner with amazing organizations to build empathy, design amazing solutions, and implement them to further the mission of doing good.

Tiffany Lentz

Vice President - Practice Lead - Social

With almost 20 years of consulting experience, Tiffany leads Pariveda's Social Impact Practice. Over the last 15 years, Tiffany has spent time working with large and small non-profits and NGOs on location in South America, South Africa, and Asia. Creating personal connection on-site with leaders, causes, and the people they serve has allowed Tiffany to gain a deep understanding of the complex problems and interdependent systems non-profits and NGOs face. As a strategic technology partner to leading NGOs and governments in developing countries, Tiffany advised and assisted on design of new products and processes for quantifiable impact, responsiveness, and increased funding. Leading operating units has allowed Tiffany to apply her own strategies and methodologies, giving her a unique set of holistic skills and a broad, value-based mindset.

Hackathon FAQs

What is a hackathon?

Hackathons are short, sprint-like events where programmers, graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, domain experts, etc. collaborate on software projects.

What am I going to be doing during the hackathon?

You will have the opportunity to work with dedicated product owners and teams to help them solve some of their biggest challenges. At the end of the weekend, you and your team will present your solution to a panel of judges who will assess your solution's implementation and impact.

Why should I participate in hackathons in general, let alone the Hackathon for Social Good?

Hackathons are an excellent way to explore self-expression and creativity through code, and they also help participants learn a lot. If you want to get experience with a new framework or technology and haven't yet found an opportunity to do so, hackathons are an excellent way to gain experience and discover new interests.
The Hackathon for Social Good combines the benefits of the hackathon with the opportunity to create lasting social change. The solutions presented at the Hackathon for Social Good will be used by real people and organizations throughout time, so you can be assured that this weekend will contribute positively to our communities. Additionally, each participant has the opportunity to learn from AWS Solutions Architects and create special relationships with Fins across Pariveda. The weekend will be filled with learning opportunities, meaningful conversations, and important work that will shape the lives of those around us!

I'm not technical or don't have a lot of technical experience, can I still participate?

YES! While solutions are typically technical, there are many additional components that are needed to present a well-rounded approach to solving a problem. This requires non-technical minds and skillsets, and everyone is invited to participate!

Do I need to sign up with a team?

You don't need to sign up with a team, as the planning team can assign teams. However, if you'd like to sign up with a team, you may do so!

Can I sleep during the Hackathon?

Yes! All participants will be able to sleep during the Hackathon. Again, managing expectations is crucial, and part of this includes taking care of yourself before, during, and after the weekend.

How is this Hackathon structured?

The Hackathon will consist of 3 "phases":

  • Friday: kick-off, initial team meetings
  • Saturday: development and presentation prep
  • Sunday: final presentations and judging
How are submissions judged?

Submissions are judged based on the following criteria: Fit, Innovation, Implementation, and Extensibility. Stay tuned for more information about our judging criteria!
